Module 7: Video Review

1.) Throughout the video, The Science of Design, I had learned about both skycrapper that skyscrappers and concrete. Skyscrappers are built of steel skeltons, that they consist of both a superstructure and a underground structure. I learned that in order to build the underground structure they need to dig a whole in the ground until they reach rock that is heavy enough to hold up the skyscrapper. Also, I did not know that skyscrappers could sway a whole meter! I learned how concrete was made, and how cement reacts with water. Also, that reinforced concrete never breaks abruptly it only cracks.
Throughout the video, Last Call for Planet Earth: Sustainable Development and Architecture, I had learned alot about the realization for green architecture. Companies are realizing that having a sustainablity strategy is important to maintain business. That buildigns with solid structures can be used many different ways. How architects condiser different designs that will integrate energy systems. Also I found the French offices very intersting, they save by reducing buildings 30%, because 20% - 30% of people are not in their offices every day, so they have no such things as a fixed office. Also, I thought that gardens in the middle of the buildings was a great way to create an aesthetic green environment.
2.) The Science of Depth video related to the text because it talked about how Greek and Roman ruins made of concrete are still standing today. The text described how we have learned and used so many techniques of constuction from the Greek and Roman civilizations.
The Last Call for Plant Earth video relates to the text because they both discuss how important "Green Architecture" has become. They touch on the protection of the environemtn and both show how development has change thorughout civilizations over time.
3.) I would say that the Science and Design video added a little depth to my understanding of architecture. I found this video to be somewhat intersting, and liked how it discussed how concrete was made. I also learned some very interesting facts about skyscrappers that I did not know before hand.
I did not really care for the Last Call for Planet Earth video, even though it had good information in it. I found it very hard to understand becuase of the accents and had to read the captions while watching the video.
4.) I had choosen these films at random. There was no specific reason why I had chosen them.
