Reflections of AED

1.)    For this course I expected to learn a lot about the different forms of art and how they were composed. I also expected to learn a lot about different artists and how or why they created such works of art. My expectations throughout this course were met.

2.)    Now that I have taken this course my definition on art wouldn’t change too much. I would define art as a way that people can express themselves and that there are many different styles and forms of art all that appeal to different audiences.

3.)    In my original posting I said that my favorite artist was Pablo Picasso, and I would say that he still is my favorite artists. Throughout the course I learned a lot more about Picasso from watching the videos and seeing more of his art work. In the beginning I just kind of picked him because he was a popular artist that I knew, but I liked learning about him and find his life to be very interesting.

4.)    I have taken many online courses; truthfully, they are usually easy, throughout this course although the content was not difficult it was too time consuming. The amount of work I had to produce for this course this semester was more than my other five classes together, especially with having to watch hour long videos. If I had to make a suggestion I would say limit the work and not just create busy work.

Art Gallery Visit 3 & Reflection Journal

1.) John Lefebre- I selected this photograph because in this self portrait he looks intelligent, and I believe that is the way he wants to be seen, this is the way that I would like to be seen as well.
Ken Heyman: In his two self-portraits he does a very good job using shadows to represent his features.
Chuck Close- I love this self-portrait because of the way he just doesn’t simply show himself, he recreates himself in hundreds of squares all displaying who he is.
2.) I chose to use pencil because I am familiar with it and that is all I had near me at the time I was creating the portrait.
3.) When creating the self-portrait I found it difficult to shape my nose and accurately draw my face. In order to overcome this I left the details very vague and kind of simple.
4.) I am not an artist and I think that my self-portrait defiantly represents that about myself because of the way that I drew it you can see that I don’t have talent.
5.) In creating the self-portrait I applied elements of line, shape, shading, and color.
6.) I enjoyed looking at other people’s self-portraits but I did not find it fun re creating myself I found it challenging.
7.) I think of my self portrait was very simple because I would never be able to accurately draw myself in a picture.

Chuck Close: Self Portrait: 2004-05. Oil on Canvas 102 x 86 in

Reflection Journal for Project 5

1.) The project I reviewed was Jenna Letteri’s Looking for Love?
2.) I had selected this project because opening many other power points it looks the most put together and appealing, as well as, a theme that I could relate to.
3.) When writing the critique I found it most challenging to find more stuff to talk about to meet the page limit.
4.) I am not sure that I like critiquing my peers, but it provides me with a chance to see others work and reflect on mine to give me a few ideas on what I could have done differently.
5.) Yes, I would like to read the critique the peers wrote about my Art Curation Project to see if I actually did a good job.
6.) On a scale of 1 – 10 I would give my self a 8 on the finished article because in the begging I had a lot to say but in the end I found myself rethinking the same things about her creation.
7.) I enjoyed doing the project, but I did not enjoy doing the peer review.

Video Review Article Week 15

1.) Greenberg on Art Criticism: An interview by T.J. Clark: concepts: Interview by T.J. Clark in 1981. Greenberg believed that writing about visual arts was much harder than writing about music or literature. Art critics Ruskin, and Degaro used their prejudices to describe art. Greenberg feels that the best art in the last 50 years is predominately abstract. Art critics must involve some sort of argument about the basis of their critics judgment.
An Introduction to the Italian Renaissance (Giorgio Vasari): concepts: the late 1560’s Florence, Italy nearing end of Renaissance was marked by a renewed enthusiasm. George Vasari wrote the Lives of the Artists, a important biography of artists such as Michelangelo. Ancient Romans create art from natural beauty and after years of stability the barbarians ran over the city destroying art. Vasari believes that Giotto’s discovered revived the realistic style of the Romans through his perspective and ways of creating art. Nudes reflect the beauty of human form. David created by Michelangelo represents a powerful symbol for the republic.
2.) Yes, these films related to the creation of my Art Criticism project, because you cant critique art based off of personal preferences. It is important to discuses and try to interpret the different works of art rather than simply calling it beautiful because you think it is pretty.
3.) I liked the films, the two films that I watched were short and straight to the point. The interview was sort of hard to understand but I liked the second film, and thought Vasari explained his thoughts very well.

Reflection Journal for project 4

While creating art project four, I first gave a lot of thought to what theme I wanted to use. I went back and forth for a while and then decided on Nature. I used nature because throughout the course I have noticed so many different works of art that would fit into this theme. I love to picture myself standing in the painting and just relaxing. I had gone through the book, and also went through many of the images on online art museums such as the Albright Knox Center. I found many of my paintings on these websites. I liked creating this project and picking out works of art that fit into my theme because it made you think about what the artists was thinking or looking at while creating the works.

Video Review for Art Project 4

1.) A.) The lowdown on lowbrow: West Coast Pop Art: Lowbrow can be defined as a person regarded as uncultivated and lacking in taste. The guy who originated the term does not like the dictionaries definition. Such artwork often displays naked people. Certain galleries would refuse to display this lowbrow artwork in their buildings. After the lowbrow artists were shut out the decided to create their own art scene.
B.) Displaying Modern Art: The Tate Approach: In the Museum of Modern Art, the artwork is displayed in chronological order, representing each art movement. Tate Modern displays its modern art in four sections, representing four different themes. Critics say that the Tate Approach requires that viewers have no knowledge of art and do not know how to classify it.
C.) Bones of Contention: Native American Archaeology: A discussion about whether or not the bones of Native Americans that were collected during the U.S. genocide against Indians should be returned. Studies show that the size of one’s brain is relative to their intelligence. Also Native Americans would have ceremonies to discover whether or not the bones truly belonged to their ancestors.
D.) An Acquiring Mind: Philippe de Montebello and The Metropolitan: Philippe de Montebello served 31 years as director of the Metropolitan Museum of art, the longest anyone has ever served as a director. He believed that a museum could never be finished and guided the acquisition of over 84,000 works of art. He also never wanted to represent a theme or artist unless they could get one truly exceptional piece. Also he expanded the euro centric collection to represent all cultures.
2.) Yes I believe that the videos related to the created of my art exhibition project. I think that the third video, Bones of Contention, had less to do about my project but still related in discussing the same topic and how its effected art history. The other three videos all shown how they had come to create themes whether it be lowbrow, the tate approach of developing themes or a curator picking each and every piece of art work that is displayed in a museum.
3.) I liked all the films but the one on Native American bones, I feel that this one related the least to what we have discussed in class and could have been left our of this video review. All the other videos added depth to my understanding of developing a theme for the art curator project. I liked how strongly people felt about what can go into a theme and how they demonstrated how a single piece of art can be categorized into more than one theme.

Video Review Module 12

1.) The videos I selected were The Power of Art: Rothko, and Uncertainty: Modernity and Art. I had selected these videos because I thought that their titles were interesting and powerful enough to grab my attention.
2.) Rothko, was an American abstract painter who dabbled in Expressionism. He had killed himself shortly after 9 of his paintings arrived in the Tate of London in 1970. Rothko’s art was liked by many, and he was commissioned to provide paintings for the Four Seasons Restaurant. In the 1920’s his paintings demonstrated the “knotted imagination”. Many had perceived his art as restful pictures, but Rothko himself viewed his work as tragic performances. In the Uncertainty: Modernity and Art video, it discussed contemporary art as societies version of the Delphic Oracles. Throughout the 19th century the industrial revolution separated man from nature. Science had greatly changed the way people of that time viewed religion. During the 20th century modern art was focused on speed and mass production. Picassos art was an antidote to the mass culture, his Guernica was an icon to the political importance to be anti-German.
3.) These videos related to the text because they discuss artwork that was shown in the book, and expands of the history of why the art was created and the artists who had created the works.
4.) I actually liked both of these videos, I thought it was interesting to learn about Rothko’s life and I liked how it the video showed how strongly art can impact the world.

Art Visit 2

Exhibition:
1.) Exhibit: Art in Craft Media 2013
2.) Theme: To celebrate Different Artists from the Buffalo Area
The Gallery:
1.) Lighting: I would say that the lighting was not bright but not dim either. Perfect for the artwork in the gallery so that it doesn’t ruin the work.
2.) Walls: The colors on the walls were very neutral, white, gray, and light and dark browns.
3.) Interior Architecture: It appeared that they used a lot of dry way to construct the walls, if you looked up rooms were made of glass walls so that you could see through them.
4.) Movement: It was very easy to walk through the gallery; the different rooms were very open useful for when the Art Gallery had large crowds.
The Artwork:
1.) The artworks were organized in separate rooms, some by artist, others by types of media such as blown glass.
2.) The artworks were similar because they were roughly the same size with the exception of some. In the different rooms the themes were similar.
3.) The artwork was different because of the artists who made them not all used the same style or colors.
4.) All of the artwork was framed differently some with black or brown, others with thick or thin frames. I believe that it appeared that the artist chose its own frame.
5.) The artwork was not all labeled the same. In rooms the artwork was on a small white label with the artist and the title. Others were larger black squares with the artist and title engraved. The larger pieces of art had very large labels telling the audience a little about their work.
6.) The artwork was spaced out nicely, not to close to one another to allow the audience to view in individuals works of art. A few rooms just focused on one piece of art being singled out.
Art Criticism Exercise:
1.)Artist: Ben Perrone
Title of Work: Illusion/Delusion
Media: Inverted pyramid constructed of black bags
Date: 2009
Size: 24 feet high
Description: An inverted pyramid constructed of black bags that look like black blocks. It is fuller and darker with more depth and the top and lessons as you gradually look down to the bottom.
Analysis: The artist has uses elements and principles of space, shape, balance, movement, and proportion. He does this by creating an illusion while looking at the artwork. All the bags are spread out with the same amount of space and are all the same shape. He uses movement by directing our eyes through the composition to create a pattern.
Bracketing: This work of art was created to be an iconic representation of deceased soldiers returning home. The inverted temple is both a remembrance and a statement of protest against the unnecessary loss of lives. Every bag represents a member of the US, who as of 2009, have lost their lives fighting for our country.
Interpretation: I believe that artist is trying to say that too many US people have lost their lives fighting in a way that he sees as unnecessary.
2.) Artist: Allison Hoag
Title of Work: Inhalation
Media: Blown and Cast glass
Date: 2012
Description: This piece of art is very interesting to look at. There are many pieces of blown glass to look at that are places to create a pattern to bring your attention to that large centerpiece. Inside the blown glass is artwork.
Analysis: The artists has used many different elements and principles in her art work including, shape, space, form, color, balance, contract, movement, and pattern. The shape and size of the blown glass very to help create a pattern and move the viewers eye throughout the artwork. The color around all of the glass is also all the same. Bracketing: I’m not sure what this artwork reminds me off, I just thought it was very interesting to look at. In a way it kind of reminds me of bubbles but in the middle piece it looks to represent nature.
Interpretation: I believe that the artist was trying to express her vision of taking a deep breath. By calling in inhalation I’m not sure what she was trying to envision, I believe that she wanted us to interpret it in our own way.
3.)Artist: Shirley Kassman
Title of Work: A Time Built on Sand
Media: Mixed media on canvas
Date: 1929-1991
Description: This is a painting that uses great color and shapes. Values of red create the upper half of the portrait where dark colors like black and green are across the bottom.
Formal Analysis: The artists used color, shape, value, lines, balance, contrast and movement throughout this piece. By using bring colors of the same value, in creates contrast when your eyes are being brought down to the bottom where the darker colors are.
Bracketing: This picture reminds me of an ocean and sand. When looking at the squares pieces of the top it looks like waves settling on the darker green sand. Interpretation: I am not sure what the artist was trying to say but something peaceful.

Video Review Module 11

1.) The videos I selected were Matisse and Picasso, and Dada and Surrealism. I selected these videos because I was familiar with Picasso and had just read about the movements of dada and surrealism in the text and thought it would be interesting to watch the video to learn something new.
2.) For the Matisse and Picasso I learned that Matisse was like a father figure to Picasso. Matisse was a French man who was deliberate and rational as an artist. Where as, Picasso was impulsive and a hard worker, who put himself into his artwork. Picasso studied under Matisse for a long while where they worked to create art together. Also he believed that drawing and painting was the same with just a few less materials.
For the Dada and Surrealism video I learned that Dada was a reaction to WWI where surrealism followed. Surrealism was a new way for artists to express their unconscious minds. Kurt Schmitters, an artist during this movement played with collages in 1918. Throughout these movements many artists used art to act as a way to attack political figures and beliefs. Also Dali was an artist from this time period who created a world where nothing made sense.
3.) These videos related to the readings in the text because they focused to the different art movements that we read about and further expanded on the artists that are briefly talked about and used as examples in the text. By elaborating on the different styles and the works of the artist both the videos and text help to show how art has developed over time.
4.) I liked both these videos, while they were long, I like to see the different art works that they show that are not already in the text. Also, it is interesting to see the ideas of art movements from a different perspective other than from just reading it in the text.

Video Review Module 10

1.) The videos I selected were Buddhism and Hinduism. I had selected these two videos because I thought it would be interesting to compare the two religions.
2.) For the Buddhism video I learned a lot about their culture. For starters I learned that it began in India, that Bodh Gaya is a scared place where fact and legend intertwined. I thought the gateway to the temple that was carved with teachings was very interesting because of how much it meant to the people. I has learned that Buddha said that monks can be in the world but may not be on it, that this was the Buddha’s way. Also the golden age where teachings of Buddhism swept all throughout India, and they had a multitude of followers. Also I learned that after Buddha died it ended the golden age. His final teaching was all compounds wear out, walk your own way will diligence. And after a hundred years after his death Buddhism split into two groups. From the Hinduism video I learned that the oldest inhabited city in the world is Varanasi. That it is over a 3000 year old religious story. Also I believed how much the stream/ river of Ganges meant to the Hindu’s that is where death, life, and rebirth happened. I got to watch an Aarti ceremony that literally means removal of pain. These ceremonies are dedicated to the mother of Ganges who helps those who bathe in her waters.
3.) I feel that these videos related to the text because in both videos they touched on the culture and how it influenced their architecture.
4.) I thought that these videos were very interesting. I like how I got to see more visuals of their architecture, and culture further than the book had touched on. I also found it very interesting to compare the two cultures by watching one video after the other.

Mask

Par Man Halloween Mask - Japan
Dominican Devil Mask - Carnival, Dominican Republic

Fancy Coconut Mask – Loiza, Puerto Rico

4.) While creating my mast I used a few elements and principles. I used line, color, and shape to create the design that I wanted. I used bright vibrant colors all in the same shade, reds and oranges to create an effect while using its opposite color green. Also I used three dimension when shaping the eyes and the mouth to give the mask a real like face. I also used pattern all around the mask to keep it simple and easy on the eyes.

5.) I like my finished mask and enjoyed creating it. It is not everyday I sit down with crayons and get creative. I enjoy the process of researching and coming up with different ideas and incorporating them all into my finished product.

Module 9 Video Reviews

1.) I had selected The Drawings of Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci: The Mind of the Renaissance. I selected these two videos because both of their names are familiar to me and I like their artwork.
2.) A.) In the Drawings of Michelangelo video I learned a lot about Michelangelo’s work. For starters we all know what an amazing artist he was, but I learned about how he aimed to display perfectionism through his techniques. I found it very interesting that he taught himself how to sculpt and how he became a master, look at his sculpture of David. He mainly focused on human figures. Also I found it interesting how much work went into his sketches of the drawings for the Sistine chapel.
B.) In the Leonardo da Vinci video it taught me a lot about Leonardo da Vinci himself by taking us through his life. Leonardo was a painter, sculptor, architect and engineer. He studies anatomy, physiology, architecture, along with many other ideas of science and art. He was considered the “Renaissance Man” and principles of proportion and balance were extremely important throughout his artwork. He had also worked for the King of France near the end of his career.
3.) These videos had related to the text because both Michelangelo and Leonardo were discussed throughout the chapters. For example the Mona Lisa and the statue of David are two of the most famous pieces of art that these artists are responsible for creating.
4.) I had liked both of these videos; I like both of these artists and often use their work as examples throughout our assignments. Both videos had added depth to my knowledge about these artists as well.

Hand Drawing

1.) It was weird to use my hand as the subject of drawing because I never really concentrate on all of the details of my hand. But I thought it was fun to try to recreate even though I have horrible drawing skills.
2.) The media that I selected was a pencil because it was what I had closet to me and I have never worked with charcoal before.
3.)When creating the drawing of my non-dominant hand it was difficult I never write with my non-dominant hand so I found trying to make the lines very difficult.
4.) I think the point of showing the difference between your dominant hand and your non-dominant hand was shown. It was more difficult and looked more abstract then using your non-dominant hand. When using your dominant hand it was easier to show exactly what you were trying to create, your hand. I believe them to be successful studies, but they do not look similar at all.
5.) I would not consider using my non-dominant hand to create artwork in the future because it was more difficult and I got better results using my dominant hand. Maybe if I practiced more it would be easier and then I would give it some consideration.

Module 8 Video Review

1.)The video I had chosen to watch out of this list was, The Measure of All Things: Greek Art and the Human Figure. I choose this video because it sounded like it was going to relate to the text the most.
2.)A.) Throughout the video, The Measure of All Things, I learned some very interesting things. For starters, Greek art disregarded religious functions, their sculptures demonstrated realism. Statues of humans were carved with many lines to show age, beauty, and strength. Lastly, Greek pottery acted as sensual imagery. B.) From the video More Human Than Human, I had learned that the brain is hardwired to favor exaggeration. That artists are obsessed with images that don’t resemble a real human being, in fact it was common to create statues with exaggerated female form. Scientists believed that this was to express the importance of such body parts. I learned that Egyptians images were proportional and realistic and unchanging, while the Greek believed that God took human form.
3.)These videos related to the text because they further explained Greek civilization and the history that was discussed in the text. The Measure of All Things discusses the principles of balance and movement that artists put into their artwork. The More Human than Human video related to the text because it talked about how Egyptian art did not change for thousands of years, and the female statutes that were built. The text had suggested that it was for fertility but the video had suggested that it was to demonstrate their importance.
4.)I liked these films and believe that they added depth to my understanding of the readings because the videos went in depth about certain concepts that were discussed in the text. They added to my understanding of the Greek civilization by adding a different/ new perspective.

Module 7: Video Review

1.) Throughout the video, The Science of Design, I had learned about both skycrapper that skyscrappers and concrete. Skyscrappers are built of steel skeltons, that they consist of both a superstructure and a underground structure. I learned that in order to build the underground structure they need to dig a whole in the ground until they reach rock that is heavy enough to hold up the skyscrapper. Also, I did not know that skyscrappers could sway a whole meter! I learned how concrete was made, and how cement reacts with water. Also, that reinforced concrete never breaks abruptly it only cracks.
Throughout the video, Last Call for Planet Earth: Sustainable Development and Architecture, I had learned alot about the realization for green architecture. Companies are realizing that having a sustainablity strategy is important to maintain business. That buildigns with solid structures can be used many different ways. How architects condiser different designs that will integrate energy systems. Also I found the French offices very intersting, they save by reducing buildings 30%, because 20% - 30% of people are not in their offices every day, so they have no such things as a fixed office. Also, I thought that gardens in the middle of the buildings was a great way to create an aesthetic green environment.
2.) The Science of Depth video related to the text because it talked about how Greek and Roman ruins made of concrete are still standing today. The text described how we have learned and used so many techniques of constuction from the Greek and Roman civilizations.
The Last Call for Plant Earth video relates to the text because they both discuss how important "Green Architecture" has become. They touch on the protection of the environemtn and both show how development has change thorughout civilizations over time.
3.) I would say that the Science and Design video added a little depth to my understanding of architecture. I found this video to be somewhat intersting, and liked how it discussed how concrete was made. I also learned some very interesting facts about skyscrappers that I did not know before hand.
I did not really care for the Last Call for Planet Earth video, even though it had good information in it. I found it very hard to understand becuase of the accents and had to read the captions while watching the video.
4.) I had choosen these films at random. There was no specific reason why I had chosen them.

Video Review

1.) In the video, Through the Eyes of a Sculptor, I learned the process of creating a sculpture. I have never seen this completed before, and learned about how much work goes into creating the final piece. I also learned about the traditions of Michelangelos time about building sculpture and how it compares to todays time. Lastly, the most intersting thing was how artists help to restore old sculptures from the past and how much passion they show for the artwork. In the Glass and Cermics video, I learned alot. First of all right in the beginning I was shocked to hear that glass is made of sand, I have never heard that before. Also, that glass is a liquid that stiffens when cool. I enjoyed watching the process of how glass was made.
2.) The videos related to the text because they both describe how glass, ceramics, and clay were made and what they are used for. Also, they both touch on the history of the materials. Also, text talked about how clay, glass, and ceramiacs have transformed to be considered fine art through painting and creating different effects on the finish product the video had demonstrated this process.
3.) I really enjoyed the Glass and Ceramics film, it make me want to go to the corning muesum of glass. I learned alot by watching the processes of creating glass, ceramics, and a scultpre, compared to just reading it. The video's (especially Glass and Ceramics) helped me to better understand the materials and the process of creating them.

Peer Reviews

1.) http://art200byme.blogspot.com/   & http://artishappinesss.blogspot.com/

2.) Yes, I believe they both captured the elemetns and principles in their images. I also seen other elements and principles in their images other than the ones that they were trying to capture, as I found this in mine as well. For example, in David's picture he had used for lines could have also been used for space.
3.) No, my peers did not select any of the same pictures as my own.
4.) Yes, I had liked the image that David selected called, Koolpop, by Carrie Yamaoka. I had liked this media because of the way she had used a monochromatic color scheme to create such drastic effects throughout her painting. This image looks like rippling water, and I wonder if this is what she was trying to create.
5.) Yes, I found this project to be valuable. It was a nice opportunity to compare others work to my own. To see the way other classmates had interpreted things differently from my own opintions has given me a new perspective.
6.) I found the comments of my peers to be semi-useful. I liked their opinions and will take them into consideration on what I should focus more on.

LOGO

1.) I thought that creating this logo was a great way of expressing myself. I thought it was fun to do, better that reading straight out of a text book.
2.) My creative thinking process for the project was pretty simple if you ask me. At first I had no idea what I was going to do. Then I thought about what I like to doodle all the time, hearts. I wanted to make it a regular shape so I put the heart in the middle of the circled. Then I wasn't sure what to do next, but after giving it some thought I came up with the cliché saying live laugh love. However, I wanted it to be original and more myself so I used my three most important values love, passion, and dedication. While creating the logo, I had decided to use my favorite color; purple.
3.) The most important discover I made while creating this logo, was how easy it was. I didn't think that I could be this creative. I also used the element's of color and value throughout my logo.
4.) The most important information I got out of watching the videos, PowerPoint, and the text was how easy it is to express yourself through a simple design. I had liked the video Repackaging the Brand better, because I liked how it had showed the process of changing the packaging, shape and design of the bottle, and how much it can change sales.

Project # 2 ! Art Gallery Visit # 1

A.) 1.) Yaacov Agam’s Free Standing Painting, 1971 created with painted aluminum, wood, and stainless steel made an impression on me. I thought that this work of art was super fascinating and pulled my attention. I think that Agam did an awesome job using the effect of art and it played with your eyes.
A.) 2.) Jack Youngerman’s acrylic on canvas, Roundabout, 1970 had both made and impact and an impression on me. It impacted me because it looked simple enough like I could create a painting similar. It made an impression on me because even though the shaped made it look simple, the colors created a complexity.

B.) 1.) I had felt a connection with, Thomas Hart Benton’s lithograph, Old Man Reading, 1941 because the man reading looks depressed. I had mad the connection of the time the work of art was created and what was occurring, the world wars. I had found this lithograph really impressive because it displayed what most people were experiencing during this rough time.
B.) 2.) I had also felt a connection with Karin Davie’s oil on canvas, Pushed, Pulled, Depleted, & Duplicated # 7, 2002-2003. This was a series of paintings, all similar with the lines and curves that had added the effects to the work of art. I had liked this particular one out of the painting because it had represented to me the confusion of being tugged in all different directions.

C.) 1.) I would like to know more about Francesco Clemente’s, oil on linen, Son 1984. I had stared at this painting for awhile because of the contrast throughout the painting. I can not figure out what the big yellow circles were supposed to represent. By being titled Son, I had thought that it was maybe representative of his children.
C.) 2.) I would also like to know more about Lisa Stefanelli’s oil on board,Boldwood 1966. This work of art also intrigued me because I cannot quite figure out what she is trying to represent. I would like to understand what she was trying to create or whether was simply just a design that means nothing.

Module 4

1.) I actually found creating the Value Scale and Color Wheel alot of fun. I could not find the exact color cyan in the store so I just bought a blue and you can definatley see the difference. While creating these projects I learned alot about value and mixing colors.
2.) I enjoyed working with the paint better. I found it more fun to mix paint than to just shade with a pencil. It is not everyday I play around with paint for homework.
3.) The most important discovery that I learned while creating these projects was how differently the colors can turn out just by using a different shade. Instead of using blue, red, and yellow, using the real primary colors made a huge difference in the colors than appear.
4.) I had always thought that the primary colors were red, blue, and yellow. I may have heard it before that the true colors were magenta, cyan, and yelow but that fact never stuck with me. While watching the video and seeing the difference I had a true ohh moment that struck me. I found the colors video to be extremely helpful while making my own colorwheel.

Project 1: Elements & Principles

http://s967.photobucket.com/user/DemiFlynn/slideshow/
For this project I first read the chapters to become familiar with the different elements and principles that create art. It was still a little difficult for me to come up with all of the pictures because some of the principles incorporate others but in the end I think I did a great job.
At first, I didn’t know what pictures I was going to use; the text demonstrates the elements and principals with works of art that you don’t usually find around me. So after previewing the student sample which helped me a lot. I found that these elements and principals are in things that I look at every day, without really thinking about it. I then looked through my camera at pictures I just took while I was on vacation, and walked around and took pictures of the other elements and principals I still needed.
However, the creative part ended up being the easiest part. Photo bucket was difficult and didn’t want to upload most of my photos. I had an easy time creating the account and once I figured out what I was doing it was relatively easy.

Module 3

1.) Color is the reflection of light and is generally determined visually by the measurement of hues, saturation, and brightness. These colors can effect our emotions, although not the same way for everyone. For example the color red is typically associated with food, and makes you hungry. Blue tends to represent sadness, while black and yellow together tell you to be cautious.
2.) Persoanlly, I feel that knowing that color is simply the reflection of light is amazing. When I look at a colorful picture, I dont think about the light thats being reflected. But, in reality what your seeing is the light that is being reflected not the light that is being absorbed. That part to me is the most intriguing because I would expect it to be the exact opposite.
3.) In the color video, I thought that it was interesting how people can choose colors based of their emotions like when June was creating her painting. I also thought that June's favorite painting, Assumption of the Virgin, was beautiful through the painters ability to use the color red and his use of light to create reflections.
4.) In the feelings video, I find that fact that art was created to express reason interesting. Art in the 18th century was used to describe human feeling. Artisits like Goya and David displayed emotions of anger, resentment, and nobility through principles of space and color. Without art, our society would have developed in a completely different way.

Module 2

1.) a.) Aesthetics: Philosophy of the Arts: - Key concepts: There are many different theories or views on aesthetics. Everyone may have different reasonings as to why people view art as beautiful and what excites our senses. Philosophers such as Plato, Aristotle, Addison, Hutchenson, and Kant all define aesthetics differently. Throughout the centuries their theories have affected the way the world looks at art. The two theories that stuck out to me the most are Plato and Kant. Plato recognized beauty in all things, not just physical and Kant believed it was through genius nature set rules to art.
b.) CNN Article: - Key concepts: Certain aspects of art have become universally appealing, such as symmetry. Artists have created ways to create elements and princibles like, depth and brightness, that create illusions that our brain is wired to make sense of. However, while art may be universally intrepreted, every individual has their own perceptions. Such perceptions can be influences through age, religoin, and culture.
c.) Carta: - Key Concepts: Symmetry, symbolism, and compostion. Art is a form of communication and is constantly changing to adjust to our conscious and unconscious needs. Changeux and Ramachandran, do a great job explaining the experiences that evolve from aesthetics. Ramachandran explains how works of art can make your brain work.
2.) I feel that Immanuel Kant’s theory on aesthetics is most important. Kant was from the 18th century during the enlightenment period. I feel that his theory was significant because it led to drastic changes of the views of aesthetics. Kant’s theory of genius, “through genius nature set rules to art,” describes how our judgment and moral reason is what allows us to experience beauty. Although I dislike his use of the word rules, I like to think of this as the structure that creates the commanalites amongst art. This theory is what led us to the period of romanticism.
3.) Ramachandran and Changeux's scientific view on art is very direct in terms of relating art to science and evolution. Although I think that science and evolution have a significant role in art, I do not feel that it is where art comes from entirely. Ramachandran admits to contradicting himself, but makes good points on how works of art can cause powerful reactions from the brain. I find this to be the most interesting point he makes as well as his display of "aesthetic jolt" where he uses images to demonstrate how the brain works to create form out of objects. (The smiley face out of a bunch of dots) From Changeux I found the most interesting point to be the difference of how the brain words consciously vs nonconsciously and how you pick up on different information while in different states of consciousness.
4.) The videos and articles related to the readings in the text by further explaining the concepts in the book, such as aesthetics and how the brain forms perceptions. Also, they explained why perceptions of art have changed over time through cultural differences, evolution, and indivualistic expression.
5.) In my opinion, the article added to my understanding of the topics in the text the most because it was easy to understand and explained how the brain recognized art not only through reasoning but through examples. The videos were tough to get through because they were long, and generally boring, however, I liked the aesthetics video because it helped me to come up with a good understanding of aesthetics thought the many different view points on the topic.
